We do so through residential addiction recovery programs, which have helped thousands of men free themselves from the chains of addiction and resurrect their lives. Why Spiritual Growth Fuels Lasting Change

Breaking free from addiction is not simply about quitting a substance. It is a whole-person renovation — body, mind, and spirit. For many people, anchoring that change in a vibrant relationship with Christ turns shaky first steps into steady forward motion. Far from being a final flourish, faith supplies recovery’s beating heart, providing purpose, resilience, and hope.

Why Spiritual Growth Fuels Lasting Change

Addiction thrives on isolation and despair. Spiritual growth counters both by inviting honest connection, first with God, then with others. Integrating faith into your recovery journey offers:

            Restored identity:

Scripture replaces labels such as “addict” with “beloved child of God.”

            Deeper motivation:

The desire to honor God’s design fuels perseverance when cravings strike.

            Enduring hope:

Belief in Christ’s grace keeps relapse from feeling like the end of the story and fuels the courage to start again.

             Community

            and accountability:

Church small groups and Christ-centered recovery meetings surround individuals with mentors, sponsors, and peers who understand both the struggle and the solution.

            A practical moral compass:

Scripture offers clear guidance for daily decisions, helping people recognize triggers, set healthy boundaries, and choose life-giving habits.

Daily rhythms that calm the mind:

Prayer, worship, and Scripture reading slow racing thoughts and redirect cravings toward God’s peace.

            Service beyond self:

Faith naturally pushes recovering people to give back — whether mentoring newcomers or volunteering in the community — turning hard-won lessons into hope for others.

A Relationship With Christ: The Cornerstone of Renewal

For Christians, recovery involves more than leaving substances behind; it means walking toward Christlikeness.

Confession and forgiveness break shame’s grip.

            1 John 1:9

assures believers that repentance brings complete pardon.

Daily surrender replaces self-reliance with God’s strength, which is vital when willpower alone runs out.

Community discipleship provides accountability. Church small groups and Christ-centered recovery meetings create safe spaces to celebrate victories and confront setbacks.

Practical Ways to Weave Faith Into Recovery

Building a life of sustained freedom requires intentional spiritual discipline. These practices do not earn grace; they position people to receive it.

Start and end the day with God’s Word:

Even five focused minutes in Scripture or a devotional frame the day in truth. Before bed, reread a verse that hits home and ask God to seal it in your heart overnight.

Pray honest, short prayers throughout the day:

“Help me, Lord” counts. So does “Thank you.” Constant conversation invites God into triggers and triumphs alike.

            Serve others early and often:

Volunteer at a soup kitchen, stack chairs after church, or mentor someone newer to recovery than you are. Service shifts focus from “my struggle” to “our shared humanity,” reinforcing purpose.

Create a worship playlist for tough moments:

Songs steeped in Scripture can steady racing thoughts. Keep earbuds handy for cravings or anxiety spikes.

            Memorize anchor verses:

Write two or three verses on note cards, such as

            1 Corinthians 10:13

             or

            Isaiah 41:10

, and carry them in your wallet. When temptation flares, recite the verses aloud.

            Schedule weekly Sabbath rest:

Addiction presses the pedal to the metal. A set day of rest reminds you that your value lies in Christ, not constant activity.

Meet regularly with a pastoral counselor or spiritual mentor:

Licensed professionals who integrate faith and therapy bridge biblical insight with evidence-based techniques. A seasoned mentor can help you process Scripture’s application to daily hurdles.

            Practice confession and communion:

Whether privately in prayer or corporately at church, these sacraments reinforce grace, humility, and community — antidotes to shame and isolation.

            Fast from digital noise:

Choose a weekly evening to log off social media and lean into silence or guided Christian meditation. Space allows God’s still, small voice to surface.

Join a Christ-centered support group or recovery program:

Church recovery ministries or faith-based 12-step meetings pair proven steps with biblical truth. These gatherings offer testimony, teaching, and a sponsor who walks the journey with you.
Recovery is rarely linear; it unfolds in loops of progress, setbacks, and renewed determination. Faith steadies that winding path, reminding each traveler that missteps do not erase God’s call or the possibility of change. As Scripture promises, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away.” That promise fuels transformational recovery — surrendered one day at a time.

The Refuge is a leading faith-based, non-profit addiction recovery ministry in Ohio. We work to change the lives of men affected by addiction through Christ. Our goal is to take men from active addiction to becoming responsible men of God who go on to serve as lights to their families and communities. We do so through residential addiction recovery programs, which have helped thousands of men free themselves from the chains of addiction and resurrect their lives. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction,

Why Government Relations Matter for Christian Nonprofits

           Building Bridges of Grace

At The Refuge, I have learned that love looks like many things. Sometimes, it looks like listening to a man share his story of addiction for the first time. Sometimes, it looks like helping someone build a resume after a year of recovery and healing. And sometimes—perhaps less obviously—it looks like walking into a government building and sharing a vision of restoration with someone in a suit.

I know that sounds idealistic. Government relations and Christian mission? Aren’t those worlds meant to stay separate?

But after years of sitting across tables from state senators, city council members, county commissioners, and state agency staff, I’ve come to believe something deeply: when done with integrity and humility, engaging with government is not a compromise of our faith—it serves as an extension of it.

           When Government Engagement Feels “Unspiritual”

Many faithful Christians are understandably wary of politics. The headlines are loud, the culture feels polarized, and it can seem like any association with public systems risks tainting a pure gospel.

           I’ve heard it all:

“Our help comes from the Lord, not from public funding.”

“We shouldn’t depend on the government to do what the Church is called to do.”

“Politics are dirty—we need to stay focused on the mission.”

And yet, throughout Scripture, we see something else. Joseph interpreted dreams in Pharaoh’s court and saved a nation from famine. Daniel prayed toward Jerusalem even as he served in Babylon’s highest offices. Esther risked her life to speak truth to a king. Paul invoked his Roman citizenship not to gain privilege, but to keep the gospel moving forward.

And in Jeremiah 29:7, the people of God—exiled in a land not their own—are told to

“seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you... and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”

Government isn’t our Savior. But it is FULL of our neighbors who we are called to love.

What It’s Looked Like for Us

At The Refuge, we’ve experienced firsthand the power of what’s possible when Christian nonprofits engage the public square with clarity and compassion. In the past few years, we’ve secured over $2.6 million in competitive government grants—local, county, and state. Those funds have allowed us to offer our program to more men, at no cost, and build the systems necessary to support long-term recovery.

We’ve also pursued—and received—state certification through Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services. That process wasn’t easy, but it has opened doors for us to serve with greater credibility, accountability, and collaboration. We’re now a trusted partner in the state’s recovery landscape, and we’ve maintained our core identity as a Christian ministry every step of the way.

These relationships weren’t about gaining power. They were about stewarding influence—on behalf of the men we serve and the families they return to.

           Faithfulness, Not Favoritism

We don’t engage in government relations to get favors. We don’t ask elected officials to bend rules or push our agenda. We show up with a simple offer: here’s what we’re doing to bring healing and hope to the broken places of our community. If there’s alignment, let’s find ways to partner for the common good.

This is what I call “soft strength.” It’s not flashy. It doesn’t seek headlines. But it walks into every room with conviction, humility, and relational presence.

We’re not trying to convert policymakers. We’re trying to be a visible, faithful presence in the spaces that shape policy and possibility.

It reminds me of William Wilberforce—an English parliamentarian whose faith didn’t stay private. It compelled him to spend decades in quiet, relentless advocacy to end the British slave trade. He didn’t shout. He didn’t dominate. He stayed faithful. His work proves what can happen when a follower of Jesus shows up in government not for power, but for justice rooted in love.

main objective revolves around seeking or using a substance, it becomes harder to think about

a new role. Punching a time clock and contributing to a team effort can help fill the emptiness

It was a Monday afternoon on September 11, 2017, and I was staring at the back door of a bathroom stall – I had just finished vomiting. There was a bible verse taped to the back of the door, John 15:5. As I read through it, I stopped and scoffed at the last line, “…apart from me you can do nothing.” I began naming my accomplishments ending with an arrogant declaration, “see…I have done plenty of things apart from you.” However, despite my prideful errancy, it was in this bathroom stall that I met Jesus Christ.

Allow me to save you from having to read much of the backstory. Why had I vomited? Opiate withdrawal. Which bathroom stall was I in? A farmhouse located in Vinton County, OH. Why was I there? I spent the previous 8 years abusing opiates, particularly heroin, and I was afraid to die hating my life and hating myself. Was I hopeful of change? No. Did I think this farmhouse and all the Jesus-talk seemed “cult-ish”? Yes.

September 11, 2017, was day 1 at the Refuge and this farmhouse was known as Phase 1. The irony here or what I would now define as the providentialism of God is that I didn’t choose the Refuge. I didn’t even know the Refuge existed. So, you can imagine my bewilderment when my ride pulled into a church parking lot and not a rehab center which was my perceived destination. After sitting through orientation and learning about the Refuge, I knew two things: no way I was doing 13-months and God/discipleship is the last thing I want to be doing. Nevertheless, I had no “plan B”, so I did my best to fib my enthusiasm for God during my interview and was accepted.

Now, let’s return to the bathroom stall. Over the next 72 hours as the opiate withdrawal waged war against my body, I found myself in the same stall repeating the same steps: vomiting, then staring at John 15:5 (I should note there was more than one stall). As the week progressed and my vomiting regressed, every time I needed to use the restroom there was only one stall opened. Can you guess which one?

Surprisingly, I began finding myself locked inside that bathroom stall with no physiological need to use the toilet, but I would sit there reading that verse over-and-over; “…apart from me you can do nothing.” “…apart from me you can do nothing.” I became entranced, almost haunted by it you could say – I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Slowly, it began to make sense. Not theological sense, but sense in a practical way. I didn’t birth myself. My talents and abilities were not fabricated and applied by myself to myself. So, I asked myself, “what types of work or achievements could I really claim?” It wasn’t soon after that the theology did come – the grace of God.

I will never forget the far-left bathroom stall in that old farmhouse. I never would have imagined nor believed for that matter, what my life would become since that first day in 2017. I ended up completing the Refuge and stayed on as a Coordinator for an additional 12 months. I started a job at Franklin County Public Health where over 4 years I received 2 promotions, eventually becoming a Divisional Supervisor. I met my wife at church and got married in 2020. We have two girls, Sophia and Alessandra. In 2023, I left Public Health and returned to the Refuge as the Columbus Director. I now act as the Residential Director, overseeing all things residentially of both our Columbus and Lancaster locations. I’m currently in seminary school and I am the first alumni to be a part of the Executive Leadership team.

So, what’s different? When I list my accomplishments today, I do so humbly, ending with the statement, “but God.” Why do I end like that? Because of John 15:5, “…apart from me you can do nothing.”

Overcoming substance use disorders isn’t a matter of personal willpower alone. A powerful network of allies can keep you motivated, hold you accountable, and offer the empathy needed to persevere when obstacles arise. No one has to face addiction alone, and a supportive community is often the cornerstone of sustainable sobriety. Feeling understood, valued, and connected to others not only reduces loneliness, but also helps replace destructive habits with healthier pursuits.

illustrates how environment and companionship can influence addiction. Psychologist Bruce K. Alexander designed an enriched habitat — complete with toys, tunnels, and other rats — where test subjects could socialize instead of living in isolation. When given the choice between regular water and water laced with drugs, most rats in Rat Park showed far less interest in the drug-infused supply. Meanwhile, isolated rats exhibited higher rates of substance use.

Those who have lived through addiction themselves often become some of the most empathetic supporters. They know the pitfalls of temptation, the wave of cravings, and the sting of regret. These individuals can offer strategies for overcoming triggers and share stories of how they rediscovered hope. Talking with people who genuinely grasp your struggles can be an enormous relief. In group settings, shame and guilt often recede because participants bond over parallel challenges.

With this support, you learn that you are not “less than” or alone. Honest conversations create a safe space where it’s acceptable to talk about both triumphs and obstacles. This sense of camaraderie builds resilience, nudges you to keep trying, and normalizes the ups and downs that come with learning healthier habits.
How to Build a Support Network

Establishing a solid network of allies can feel daunting, but these steps can help jump-start the process:

Reach Out to Loved Ones

Let friends and relatives know you value their support. Share your goals and invite them to help keep you accountable. This open dialogue can strengthen existing bonds and give your recovery new momentum.

Look for Group Therapy Programs

Professional guidance in a safe, group-oriented setting can boost self-awareness and self-esteem. Licensed counselors facilitate discussions about triggers and coping strategies, while peers offer empathy that’s difficult to find elsewhere.
Organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous emphasize unity, compassion, and daily progress. Meeting attendees often form close-knit friendships that extend beyond official sessions. Sponsors, in particular, can serve as trusted confidants and advisors.

           Seek Faith Communities

Churches and other faith-based institutions sometimes run specialized recovery ministries that combine spiritual support with practical guidance. Being part of a mission-driven community can provide a sense of purpose and belonging.

           Additional Ways to Form Connections

While formal programs help, there are also informal avenues for meeting people who share your commitment to a sober lifestyle:

Volunteering at food pantries, youth centers, or animal shelters introduces you to others who share your desire to make a difference.

That sense of fellowship can be transformative — providing the missing piece for those tired of facing addiction alone. By immersing yourself in a space built on love and mutual respect, you may discover that, indeed, “the opposite of addiction is connection.”

The Refuge is a leading faith-based, non-profit addiction recovery ministry operating in Ohio. We work to change the lives of men affected by addiction through Christ. Our goal is to take men from active addiction to becoming responsible men of God, who go on to serve as lights to their families and communities. We do so through residential addiction recovery programs, which have helped thousands of men free themselves from the chains of addiction and resurrect their lives. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction,

           Healing Happens In Community

Community isn’t just a luxury—it’s essential to our flourishing as human beings.

From the very first chapter of Genesis, we see a bold declaration: we are made in God’s image. And the Christian understanding of God is deeply relational—Father, Son, and Spirit, eternally existing in communion. That means we aren’t just made

           for

            relationships; we are shaped

           by

them. Personal fulfillment isn’t a solo pursuit—it’s deeply tied to the quality of the connections we cultivate.

One of the deepest tragedies of addiction is its ability to isolate. It doesn’t just take a toll on the body or mind—it fractures relationships, leaving individuals feeling alone, even in a crowded room. That’s why one of the most critical elements of healing isn’t just breaking free from addiction itself, but

           rebuilding relationships

that foster growth, accountability, and purpose.

           Here’s why community matters:

           1. We Can’t Be Fully Human Without It

Engaging in life-giving relationships isn’t optional—it’s part of what makes us whole. Healthy relationships aren’t one-sided; they require both giving and receiving. Just as God exists in perfect communion, we are designed for the same. When we cut ourselves off from genuine connection, we shrink into a version of ourselves that lacks depth, purpose, and joy.

           2. Community Reveals and Refines Us

The right people in our lives do more than offer companionship—they challenge us. A healthy community shines a light on our blind spots, helping us see where we need to grow. It provides accountability, the kind that nudges us toward becoming better versions of ourselves. The truth is, we don’t transform in isolation. Left alone, we are more vulnerable to our weaknesses and more likely to fall back into destructive patterns. We need people who push us forward, who call out the good in us, and who stand by us when we struggle.

           3. True Growth Comes Through Serving Others

We aren’t made to be consumed with only our own wants and needs. Growth happens when we step outside ourselves and invest in others. Serving within a community gives us the opportunity to use our unique gifts—not just for personal satisfaction, but for the flourishing of those around us. It’s in the give-and-take of relationships that we find meaning, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

We often hear that we are living in an epidemic of loneliness. And the ache of loneliness tells us something:

we weren’t meant to do life alone.

We crave connection. We long to be known and to belong. Addiction severs these essential ties, cutting people off from the very thing they need most—others.

That’s why healing isn’t just about breaking free from addiction, but about

           restoring relationships

that breathe life back into the soul.

           Healing happens in community.

Freedom isn’t just found in breaking chains, but in forging new bonds.

Brace Yourself Like a Man

Recently, while reading through the Bible, I came across a powerful exchange between Job and God. In his pain and desperation, Job pleads with God, questioning the suffering he’s enduring. When God responds, it’s not with comforting words or promises of things getting better. Instead, depending on the translation, God tells Job to “gird up your loins like a man,” “dress yourself for action like a man,” or simply “brace yourself like a man.”

This struck me deeply, especially in relation to every man who, at his breaking point, begins the journey of recovery. Just like Job, who exposes his pain and vulnerability in his conversation with God, men fighting to overcome addiction must face their demons. They must stand strong before their struggles, brace themselves for the painful truths they’ll have to confront, and prepare for the reality of the battle ahead.

Addiction, much like the boils that plagued Job’s body, eats away at a man’s life. The losses Job faced—his family, his possessions—serve as a powerful symbol of what addiction takes from a man. It slowly strips away the substance of life, just as alcohol or drugs slowly erode everything a man holds dear. Job’s friends offer their advice, blaming Job’s suffering on a lack of righteousness or sin. Similarly, the addict often hears these same criticisms, but they often come from within himself.

Yes, addiction starts as a choice, a decision to use or drink. But the roots of addiction run deeper. What lies beneath the surface—the trauma, the pain, the emptiness—is where the true destruction happens. What happened that caused the drink or the drug to take such hold? When did it become stronger than relationships, passions, and the essence of life itself? And when does the bottom finally become deep enough that a man stops digging and starts reaching out for help?

When God tells Job to “brace himself like a man,” it’s not a rebuke, but an invitation. God calls Job to be mature—to face the difficult truths, to look honestly at his own heart, and to understand the heart of God. In much the same way, when a man confronts addiction, he must face his own darkness, his weaknesses, and the damage he’s caused. He’ll be forced to reckon with the people he’s let down, the years wasted, and the countless “what ifs.”

For the addict, isolation becomes a home. What might have started as a social activity ultimately turns into a solitary, destructive path. But recovery begins in connection. Job had his friends—though their advice might have been flawed, they still provided him with a community in his time of loss. Similarly, family and loved ones often want to surround the addict and help, but like Job’s friends, they may not fully understand the “why” or “how.” Still, their presence is crucial.

The turning point comes when willingness shifts into surrender. This is where change begins—when a man chooses to brace himself like a man, to face the full weight of his past, both the hurt he’s received and the harm he’s caused. It’s in this raw moment that transformation starts. The road is not easy; accepting painful truths and the sometimes-painful guidance of others is never simple. But through that pain, growth happens. Clarity emerges. And the way forward—out of the wilderness and into hope—becomes visible.

Willingness to confront our struggles head-on is the first step toward becoming the new man. This journey leads to new relationships, restored community, and brotherhood. We begin to realize we are not alone; we are part of a greater community that shares the common bond of overcoming addiction. Willingness opens the door to healing, to new and restored relationships. As a man shifts from self-centeredness to service to others, the new man begins to emerge, accepted and renewed.

I’ve have heard the process of recovery described as “the easiest hard thing you will ever do.” Facing God, standing before your brothers, and bracing yourself for change isn’t easy. Real change never is. But when a man is willing to face his darkness and put in the hard work of transformation, he will undoubtedly find the light.

Celebrating Transformation And Restoration Through Christ

On March 3, we held a special Sunday morning service at Veritas Community Church - West to celebrate men who recently completed The Refuge.

Below, you can watch the stories of seven of those men. Their stories start with years, and sometimes decades of struggles with drugs and alcohol, and the terrible toll those took on their lives, and the lives of their families.

But there is hope for those in that seemingly hopeless place. All of them found that hope at The Refuge. Our long-term residential addiction recovery ministry is offered at absolutely no cost, and helped all of them change their lives through Christ, the support of friends, and a willingness to see the process through to the end.

The Importance Of Work In Recovery

There are many elements that go into a successful recovery from addiction to drugs or alcohol.

The process starts with a man accepting that he needs help, and being willing to take the first step of seeking it out.

He needs to work with others he trusts, such as the licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistants and other licensed staffers at The Refuge in individual and group counseling to begin to identify and address the underlying issues which drove him to addiction in the first place.

He needs to build relationships based on trust and mutual support with others to provide accountability and someone to talk to when he is struggling.

However, work is also an important part of the recovery process. At The Refuge, after completing his first month, a man begins working with one of our partner employers. This not only provides a healthy daily structure, it also allows him to do something meaningful and productive, while building a work history that will help him get and keep gainful employment after he completes The Refuge.

In a survey of our 2018-2020 alumni released in 2021, an incredible 92 percent reported that they had been continuously employed in a full-time job since completing. This allows a man to not only maintain that healthy daily routine, but also to provide financially for himself, and his family.

In this episode of The Relational Recovery Podcast, Wes Thompson, the executive director of The Refuge, and Austin Hill, the associate director, talk about the important role that work plays in recovery.

Embracing Change and Transforming Lives: The Journey of the Refuge

           Dear Refuge Community,

As we reflect on the incredible two-decade journey of the Refuge, it becomes evident that change has been a constant companion throughout our ministry. From humble beginnings to where we stand today, God has continually stretched our faith, challenging us to trust Him and make adjustments for the betterment of the men we serve.

In our pursuit of fulfilling our mission, we have experienced countless tweaks, adjustments, and transformations. The ever-evolving nature of the Refuge is a testament to our unwavering commitment to making a lasting impact on the lives of those battling addiction and brokenness. Each step we take is a testament to God’s guidance and His calling upon our lives.

Over the years, we have encountered changes in various aspects, including property, locations, personnel, and most importantly, the lives of the men we support. Our journey has been marked by numerous transitions, and we have witnessed firsthand how these shifts have played a vital role in our ministry’s growth and effectiveness.

Adaptability has been key to our success. Just as we have adjusted our logo and discipleship process to enhance our operations and better serve our community, we have remained steadfast in our unwavering commitment to the gospel. We will never compromise our mission or dilute the transformative power of Christ. Our ultimate goal remains the same—to see those who are broken and addicted find restoration and healing through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Amidst the changes and challenges we have faced, we have also embraced a spirit of excellence. Our continual pursuit of improvement has led us to refine our processes, ensuring that we provide the highest quality care and support to those who turn to us for help. While we navigate state certification changes and adapt to evolving best practices, we remain anchored in our core values and the belief that God’s grace can bring about true transformation.

As we move forward, we are excited about the future of the Refuge. We are committed to walking alongside individuals on their journey to recovery, providing them with the love, support, and resources they need to overcome their struggles. We are determined to make a lasting impact and be a beacon of hope in our community.

To all those who have been a part of the Refuge—our dedicated team, compassionate volunteers, generous supporters, and the men who have courageously pursued transformation—we extend our heartfelt gratitude. It is through your unwavering support and commitment that lives are being changed, and hope is being restored.

As we stand at the threshold of new opportunities, we invite you to join us in prayer, in sharing our mission with others, and in continuing to provide the resources necessary to fulfill our calling. Together, let us press on, embracing change, trusting in God’s guidance, and witnessing lives transformed through the power of Christ.

Thank you for being a part of the Refuge family—a community united in love, hope, and the belief that every life is worth redeeming.

Several times each year, we hold a special Sunday morning service celebrating the change Christ has brought to the lives of the men who have recently completed our residential addiction recovery ministry.

These are the inspiring stories of these men, all of whom arrived broken by addiction, but who have now seen their lives transformed, and relationships restored, through Christ.

Chris arrived at The Refuge totally broken by addiction. He had lost jobs, cars, houses, and most importantly his relationships with his family.

What he found when he got here was that we don't spend a lot of time talking about drugs and alcohol. Instead, we focus on the man and the issue that led him to addiction in the first place.

After men complete The Refuge Ministry, they have the opportunity to continue living in our community with the Project 614 program.

Based on the scripture Isaiah 61:4, the vision is "They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations."

The goal is to allow men to continue living with the support and accountability of other Refuge guys, while also serving as a model of Christ-centered living on the west side of Columbus.
